An IOU (acknowledgment of debt) is a written statement in which a borrower confirms owing a sum of money to a lender. It is the basic protection when lending money to a friend or relative: without a signed writing, proving that a loan ever existed is difficult.

Fill in the form above with both names, the amount, the date and the city. Complete the repayment deadline by hand on the blank line, then print two copies and have both parties sign each one โ€” one copy for the lender, one for the borrower.

Frequently asked questions

Does an IOU need to be notarized?

Usually not: a document signed by the borrower is generally enough as written evidence between individuals. Notarization or witnesses add security for large amounts, and rules vary by country โ€” check locally for high-stakes loans.

What should an IOU contain to be useful?

At minimum: both parties' names, the amount in figures and in words, the date, and the borrower's signature. A repayment deadline and two signed copies are strongly recommended.
